Every year, the arrival of whale sharks in Oman marks one of the most exciting marine wildlife events in the Arabian Sea. During the Muscat whale shark season, these gentle giants gather along the coast to feed on naturally occurring blooms of fish eggs and plankton, creating incredible opportunities for both scientific research and unforgettable ocean experiences.

At Daymaniat Shells, we are proud to combine eco-tourism with marine conservation. For the second consecutive year, our team actively participated in the annual whale shark research project, helping to collect valuable data that supports the long-term conservation of whale sharks in Oman.

Continuing Whale Shark Research Despite Challenges

This year's research season presented unexpected obstacles. Due to the political situation in the region and the resulting travel restrictions, the international scientists who normally participate in the fieldwork were unfortunately unable to travel to Oman.

Rather than allowing the project to pause, the Daymaniat Shells team worked closely with Marine Biologists based in Oman to continue collecting essential field data. This collaboration ensured that valuable research on whale sharks in Oman could continue, highlighting the importance of local partnerships and citizen science in marine conservation.

Identifying Individual Whale Sharks

One of the project's primary goals was to identify individual whale sharks using photo identification. Every whale shark has a unique pattern of white spots behind its gills, much like a human fingerprint.

By photographing these distinctive markings, researchers can identify returning individuals, track their movements, estimate population sizes, and better understand migration patterns along Oman's coastline.

Each new identification contributes to international research efforts and helps scientists build a clearer picture of the whale shark population visiting Oman every year.

Fish Egg and Plankton Sampling with Sultan Qaboos University

Alongside whale shark identification, our team assisted Sultan Qaboos University in collecting fish egg and plankton samples from the feeding areas.

These samples help researchers understand why whale sharks gather in certain locations during the Muscat whale shark season. Seasonal concentrations of fish eggs and plankton provide an abundant food source, attracting these gentle giants to the waters around Muscat and Seeb.

Understanding this relationship is essential for protecting the habitats that support one of Oman's most spectacular marine wildlife events.

Three Weeks of Whale Shark Sightings Near Muscat

During the 2026 season, whale sharks remained in the waters around Muscat and Seeb for approximately three weeks.

Operating daily tours allowed our experienced crew to document multiple encounters, photograph individual animals, and collect valuable scientific observations throughout the season. These regular sightings reinforce the ecological importance of Oman's coastline as a seasonal feeding ground for whale sharks.

Citizen Science Makes a Difference

This project is a great example of how citizen science can support marine conservation.

Citizen science allows dive operators, snorkeling guides, researchers, and ocean enthusiasts to work together by recording sightings, photographing whale sharks, and assisting with environmental sampling. The information collected helps scientists better understand the behavior and ecology of these endangered animals.

At Daymaniat Shells, we believe every responsible wildlife encounter is an opportunity to contribute to conservation while inspiring visitors to appreciate and protect the marine environment.

Experience the Magic of Daymaniat Islands Snorkeling

Although whale shark sightings are seasonal and cannot be guaranteed, our daily Daymaniat Islands snorkeling trips offer the chance to explore one of Oman's most spectacular marine protected areas.

The Daymaniat Islands Nature Reserve is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, colorful reef fish, green turtles, hawksbill turtles, rays, and an incredible diversity of marine life. During the whale shark season, guests may also be fortunate enough to witness the world's largest fish feeding in the wild—a truly unforgettable experience.

Whether you're visiting Oman for adventure, underwater photography, or marine wildlife encounters, the Daymaniat Islands offer some of the best snorkeling experiences in the region.

Protecting Whale Sharks for Future Generations

The 2026 research season demonstrated that conservation continues even when challenges arise. Through our commitment to responsible marine tourism, Daymaniat Shells is proud to support ongoing research that helps protect whale sharks in Oman.

Every photograph, every plankton sample, every fish egg sample, and every recorded sighting contributes to a better understanding of these magnificent animals.

We look forward to continuing this important work in the years ahead while sharing the beauty of Oman's marine environment with visitors from around the world.
