What Are Eagle Rays?

Spotted Eagle Rays (Aetobatus narinari) belong to the ray family and are closely related to manta rays and stingrays. Unlike stingrays, which often rest on sandy bottoms, eagle rays are active swimmers that spend much of their time cruising through open water using slow, powerful wingbeats that resemble a bird flying through the sky.

Their dark bodies are beautifully decorated with bright white spots, making every individual unique. They also have long, whip-like tails and can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) across from wingtip to wingtip.

Despite their impressive size, eagle rays are gentle, shy animals that pose little threat to humans. Like many rays, they have a defensive barb near the base of their tail, but they only use it if they feel threatened.
